Introduction to the Banking and Insurance Program

Banks and insurance institutions are among the most important financial organizations in modern free-market economies. In addition to offering a wide range of services in their respective fields, these institutions also perform a vital social function by providing the financing that businesses require. Our department consists of two main fields: banking and insurance.

Banks are primarily institutions that collect deposits and extend loans. In addition, they provide services such as money transfers, issuing letters of guarantee, opening letters of credit, financing foreign trade, conducting foreign exchange transactions, and managing portfolios. Today, banks have also begun to engage in transactions such as options, swaps, and futures. Based on their activities, banks are classified into different types, such as commercial banks, investment banks, and development banks. In the process of globalization, international banking also plays a significant role. A banker is a professional who possesses knowledge and expertise in these operations.

Insurance institutions, on the other hand, provide coverage in many different areas, including health, life, traffic, earthquake, agriculture, natural disasters, and accidents. Insurance companies operate within an international hierarchical structure through reinsurance practices, which gives them a global dimension. An insurance specialist is a professional who has the necessary knowledge and expertise in all insurance-related processes and services. Our department’s curriculum includes core courses required for both banking and insurance. Specialization in one of these fields is achieved through elective courses starting from the third year.
